Family Focus: Learning About Ourselves with Photography
Help me give my students confidence, freedom to be creative, and see themselves, others, and our world from new perspectives with a camera and accessories.
Our classroom is full of adventurous, enthusiastic, fun-loving, inquisitive, eager learners. These students come to school every day to create, explore, and investigate through hands-on learning. We are a Title I school, so most of our children come to us with a need for a safe, loving, and comfortable place to learn and grow. Our classroom is a second home to our students. They work cooperatively, support and care about each other. We truly become a family during our time together throughout the school year.
My Project
Our first inquiry thread of the year is “Fingerprints.” During this time, we want students to learn about themselves. Other Words for Home, Where are You From?, and Leila in Saffron are picture books that tell the stories of family traditions as the characters learn about themselves through their families history. We want our students to learn their stories. Students will examine the beliefs, customs, and traditions of their families. Through the use of interviews and photography, using the requested camera and accessories, students will understand how their family history helps shape who they are today.
Students will learn how photography can be used to tell stories and capture different subjects.
The picture books about Gordon Parks who took photos of segregation in America, Ansel Adams, an environmentalist famous for photos of the natural world, Dorothea Lange who photographed faces of the Great Depression, and James ZanDerZee, famous for his photos of the Harlem Renaissance teach us different types of photography. These stories can help students answer the question “How can you use photos to learn and teach about our world?”
We will also incorporate math and science standards. The basics of photography like the “rule of thirds” can help teach fractions. Students can also play with close ups and positioning to incorporate math by measuring the distance between two perspectives and talk about the perceived height of an object based on where each photograph was taken. Refraction and reflection will also be explored in a way that will interest students and make sense to them. The photography prism will help to teach the light spectrum.
We plan to turn our classroom into a photo gallery, publish an online gallery, and find ways to incorporate photography throughout the year to help with learning our grade level standards and complement our community outreach projects.
