I teach English Language Learners at several Title I schools in my district. These schools are filled with energetic students who are ready to learn! I provide intensive English instruction to ELL students in kindergarten through 5th grade. My students are from various countries around the world and their first language is not English. Many of my students come to the United States as refugees and were forced to leave their native countries due to conflict. Others immigrated with their families for better job, educational, and religious opportunities. My language instruction is organized to assist students in communicating effectively in English both in and out of school and to use English to achieve academically in all content areas.
Just imagine how overwhelming and alienating it is to be educated in an unfamiliar language and culture.
My students, their US native peers, school families, and school staff need opportunities to learn an appreciation for the countries, cultures, and languages represented at our school. Through various activities, they can learn to connect with their own cultural heritage and come to appreciate that the United States is a country of immigrants.
My Project
Research shows that family engagement can have positive impacts on children’s cognitive, social and emotional development. My students and their families lost most of their at-home educational materials, including books and games. My students' families want to be involved in their children's learning as much as possible, but now have the barrier of the loss of materials.
My ELL students and their families need games and books that will provide additional learning support.
For my ELL children,
family engagement efforts allow parents to serve as a vital resource for learning. I believe that the involvement of culturally and linguistically diverse parents is critical to the unique educational needs of their children. By providing materials and training for parents, I can utilize this powerful tool to augment my the learning they receive at school. These activities will give families the opportunity to come together for enjoyment at a time when their lives have drastically changed.
