This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an exceptional 7-12 grade public charter school. Our students come to us from all walks of life: free and reduced-priced lunch, English language learners, special education needs, and gifted student population.

My goal is to engage students and their families in creative makerspace activities to foster a love for science, technology, engineering, and math.

The students at my school have never had the opportunity to engage in activities in a STEM Lab/ Makerspace setting. Our students are highly motivated, and crave engaging opportunities outside of the classroom environment. Our community has expressed the need for problem solvers and critical thinkers to fill high paying jobs available in our city. Giving our students open-ended DIY projects and STEM activities from a young age, will help engage students in creative projects to foster problem solving and critical thinking.

I would like to provide my students with the necessary materials and infrastructure to see themselves as future mathematicians, scientists, and engineers. We would like to invite our families to a family involvement STEM night. This family engagement will help parents recognize their students interests and strengths, to further encourage our youth to visualize their future in high paying STEM jobs.

My Project

Our school is working hard to create a Makerspace. Educators across the world are seeing the importance of allowing students to "create" and "be creative". As we begin to see our students gain an interest in open-ended STEM activities, we would like to share these experiences with our families.

Please help us create "take home starter Makerspace kits", to send home with families who participate in our STEM/ Makerspace Night.

We are planning a STEM/ Makerspace night at our school. As students enter middle and high school, we often see a decline in family engagement. We hope that this event will bring students and their families together to build, play, and create. We will have several centers/ stations for families to choose from, including, but not limited to paper circuits, DIY electric motor stations, Strawbees, wood work bridges, and many more. The centers will engage students in grade appropriate science, technology, engineering, and math activities aligned to state standards. Materials used are mostly 'everyday' items, easily accessible to educators and families.

To ensure that this is not a one time activity, we would like to send families home with a Makerspace starter kit. This kit will include a glue gun with glue sticks, a motor, battery holder with batteries, propeller, switch, craft wood, etc. This starter kit will allow families to create a few DIY projects at home. We hope to be able to offer similar family involvement events at least twice during the school year.

Students and parents will be asked to complete a survey to evaluate student learning. At the end of the school year, teachers will be asked to measure student growth in creativity and critical thinking through a project based assessment.
