This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing. They do their best to prepare to learn and try to achieve high expectations even from home. Our school is located in a low-income area with most students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
Engagement is key for my students and I want them to be engaged in their learning and succeed even in these unpredictable times!
My students can learn, be successful, and have fun at the same time. These children have few resources at home to assist in hands-on activities that first graders need. I focus on the potential and growth of the children. That growth is measured in student joy and love for learning, their engagement in learning activities, and their desire to focus during these uncertain times!
My Project
It is unfortunate that my students are doing most of their work online. Many do not have the materials to engage in hands-on learning activities at home. At first I was not too concerned as I planned on returning to the classroom and making up for lost time. It is sad to acknowledge we will not return to the classroom this school year. The Distant Learning Project I propose will supplement the manipulative rich education we were focused on in the classroom.
As this pandemic continues my heart is heavy, knowing most families lack funds to support educational learning activities and first graders thrive on physical, hands-on activities.
In an effort to engage families, I would like to supply each child with a game that would involve all family members and yield comradery while teaching sportsmanship, turn taking, number sense, and reading skills.
The play dough would be a familiar fine motor activity students used in class. Each child would get two containers to roll into "snakes" and form spelling and high frequency words. Students take photos of their words and share in a video spelling their word and using it in a sentence.
Please help first grade students by providing funding for Families Play to Learn! Thank You!
