Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in the South Bronx. We are a "high needs" school, with approximately 81% of our student body qualifying for the free lunch program. As a one-time kindergarten teacher now teaching first grade, I understand the importance of giving students the support they need to make the necessary letter-sound connections that will help them learn to read and write. These skills are of the utmost importance in first grade. Now is the time that our kids need to acquire these skills. If not, they will move ahead but remain behind. I believe phonemic awareness can be made fun and exciting for first grade students. They come to school ready and excited to learn. With the right tools we can assure they leave each day wanting to learn more and continue to practice the skills they've acquired. The tools I'm proposing include Word Activity Kits, Word Family Sorting Games, Fun-to-Chant Family Rhymes, and other excellent materials. They will, I believe, be fun and supportive ways for my first grade students to continue enhancing their exploration of the English language on their way to a lifetime of literacy and learning. My students and I thank you for your consideration.
