This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Carson-Gore Academy of Environmental Studies is a school for ETK-5th grade students. We are located in the inner city of Los Angeles. We have a population of approximately 600 students all receiving free and reduced lunch. About 50% of our students are English Learners, more than 12% of our school is in a specialized classroom, and many of our students receive extra resource services.
We view each child as an important and contributing member of his or her family, community, state, nation, and world.
Instruction is standards-based, project-based, and community-based, with technology as a centerpiece of our efforts to bring the world closer to each child’s home. In addition, we work to educate our students to preserve, protect, and conserve natural habitats, species, and precious resources.
My Project
Our school is coming together to create an amazing Fall Festival this year. These items will be used to help create a festival that the students will remember. The location in which our students live makes it difficult for students to enjoy the joys of fall and Halloween safely. Therefore, our goal is to provide our school community with a secure location for our students to enjoy a traditional childhood experience without fear of harm. Further, we’ve incorporated STEAM activities into the occasion thereby making it a fun learning experience. Students will engage in math, science and cooperation activities while building so as to engage critical thinking and collaboration.
This is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and is also a great way for our school to be involved with the surrounding community.
We are hoping to expand our current activities and make this festival engaging for every child at our school. The younger students will be able to participate in games and win prizes, while the older ones will be able to take a walk down the haunted hallway. All students will be invited to participate in multiple STEAM activities at various tents. Many of these items will also be reusable so it is the project that keeps on giving year after year.
