Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our charter academy is a diamond in the rough. We are located in Los Angeles, California and serve 361 students. Our students are predominately Hispanic, coming from challenging home lives, and we are a low-income/high poverty district, (98% of our student population are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch). Although our students and their families face many challenges, we have built an extremely close community that goes far beyond the scope of a typical school. The parents are happy to contribute to the learning community in any way they can, and are actively involved in the education of their children, even though many are balancing multiple jobs. Our students come to school proud to be committed to success. I feel that it is my duty to ignite a love for learning in my students and to create lifelong learners.
My Project
Our students are nearing the final unit of Readers Workshop, which calls for a class full of students who want to engage in reading fantasy novels. I am planning on using the Harry Potter class set to ignite excitement in students as they learn life lessons alongside the characters in their stories. This unit will bring the characters to life as our young readers travel to Narnia, Neverland, Hogwarts, and beyond. They will learn lessons about responding to challenges, maintaining perseverance, having courage in desperate times, the importance of being honest, and so much more.
In our technology saturated society, it is necessary to provide children with the opportunity to build their imaginations and creativity.
What better way is there to accomplish this goal, than to provide students with rich literature that captivates their minds and takes them to places that are otherwise impossible? I am confident that every student will walk away from this unit with a reinvigorated love for reading.
