Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The group of students that will benefit from this project are a group of students that have a love for learning in a creative and innovative way. These students are interested in applying their technology skills in a purposeful manner. They enjoy activities that help them to further their learning and make deeper connections in a modern way.
A part of my goals as a teachers is to ingrain a love for literacy in my students.
A step to accomplishing this goal is having reading materials available to my students that are challenging, complex, and interesting to them. These students are college bound and want to take advantage of every chance for learning that is offered to them.
My Project
Have you ever noticed the feeling that a new book gives? I have many times, the feelings of happiness, excitement, and anticipation burst through me as soon as I lay my hands on a new book. My students love to read, many of them have excelled in their reading levels over the course of the year. But, I ran into one problem... I have a lot of students, but not enough books at their reading levels.
I am looking to expand my leveled library so that all of my students interests are addressed and they have choice in what they want to read.
My students and most of my fellow coworkers know that I absolutely love books. I have a lot of them, but the question is, do I have the right ones? A lot of the books that I have are older and are beginning to fall a part with many pages missing and covers ripped. Ever wonder why publishers change the cover of a book ever couple of years? It's true, students judge books by their covers, I noticed that during independent reading time, there was a lack of interest in reading and I believe this is largely due to what was available to my students.
I will be using these books in my leveled library to create choice for my students. As a teacher I want to grow a love for reading and books in my students. This can better be done by giving students options that they are interested in.
