Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a public, Title I funded, charter school where all students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are located in a small, urban community. Many of our students come from diverse backgrounds and we have a high percentage of students from military families. Our school is a place where children are empowered to become the best learners they can be, with teachers and staff who make them feel safe, comfortable, and welcomed each and every day.
In many urban communities, students are not provided with the same tools, materials, and experiences found in more affluent areas.
My first graders are creative, loving, and—most importantly—unstoppable in their quest to be successful. Their families sought out our public charter school and put their most valuable, young people in my classroom. The parents are confident in my abilities as a teacher and with these new partnerships and community connections, I enter my room every day more prepared and driven to provide a meaningful learning experience.
My Project
A key component of my classroom is making reading an ongoing journey we embark on together. Reading is exponentially more exciting when you are able to self-select the texts you explore. This project is filled with genres and topics the students in my classroom aspire to read.
One of my favorite quotes from Kelly Gallagher is, "To become a lifelong reader, one has to do a lot of varied and interesting reading." I want students to fall in love with the books they read by removing the variable of accessibility.
This project gives students a unique opportunity to be in the driver seat of their learning and choose for themselves what books they want to navigate.
