My Students

My students are "ridiculously awesome" as they stated in their own mission statement, and I would have to agree. They come from varied backgrounds in a midsize town. It is a title-one school which means many of the students come from a low-economic environment. They face various challenges from learning English as a second language, to adoption, to single parent homes. However, they come each day eager to learn and improve their lives.

Their goal is to include everyone, do their best, be OK with making mistakes, and learn everything they can in 7th grade.

This includes life lessons, discovering their learning styles, and how to become life long independent learners. They are fascinated by recent brain research and how it affects their education. They are a joy to teach and I want to make their learning environment as "awesome" as they are.

My Project

Over the past two years there has been such a push for digital learning. Even when the kids are in school, so much of their work is done on a chromebook. I want my kids to reconnect with real physical science (because its fun).

I not only want my students to connect with science, but with each other as they work together in small labs.

These materials will help me create and complete several hands on mini-labs for my students. These labs will teach principles of the laws of motion, electricity and gravity. We also need some relief from out old worn out headphones that have gotten way too much use these past two years.

I'm the most excited about the Gravitrax mini-lab. This is education at it's best. As the kids work together to create a marble maze (Rube Goldberg would have been envious of), they will be applying the laws of motion, magnetism, and gravity all at once. These types of activities will help my students connect to science and each other.
