Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The first ammendment protects freedom of the press but it doesn't ensure that young people will understand exactly what is being protected and why. Journalism is a pillar that holds up our society and protects it from being undermined and taken advantage of.
I have the title of teacher but I consider myself more of an advisor with the goal of letting them take ownership of informing not only themselves but their peers as well.
Helping them understand that what they do in my classroom will not only help themsleves but everyone that comes across their work.
I teach at a lower-middle income school that has a high proportion of foreign-born students, with 58 percent students born outside of the United States. Over 80 percent of the student population are deemed to be economicly disadvantaged.
That being said, I've had students in the last couple years win Silver Knight awards for Journalism and Digital Media. I've had editors go on to prestigous universities such as Harvard and Brown.
We don't make excuses and we do the best that we can. I would love to provide my students with some upgraded equipement to help them shine even brighter.
My Project
My students are very creative and do an amazing job on their video assignments. We put on a weekly to bi-weekly news show with feature segments that are watched by the whole school and provide valuable information. Using a Go Pro package will improve the quality of these segments.
The camera stabilizer and microphones will take their work to next level by giving them professional-level equipement.
The larger capacity memory cards will allow the students to make longer format news segments and not worry about having enough space.
Mainly, I want to give my students the tools they need to be just a little extra proud of the fantastic work they already do.
