Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My awesome second graders come from a very low socioeconomic background with the majority falling below the poverty line. They are mainly English language learners (80%) and many of them live in homes which house multiple families under the same roof. The median income is well below poverty level, with some being homeless. Some of these seven- and eight-year olds have the sole responsibility of taking care of their younger siblings while their parents are working, with many parents working more than one job. Others are latchkey children.

Our school is Title I and 90% of the children receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch.

In addition to the many challenges that these hard-working students face, they also are coping with the fact that our school is situated in a high crime area with frequent gang activity. My children have extremely limited access to technology in their homes, yet with all these obstacles, my students come to school with much enthusiasm and an eager desire to learn.

My Project

This year we read some great fairy tales and folk tales such as The Three Billy Goat Gruff, The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and John Henry. I want to further enhance my students learning by providing them with real world STEM activities. First I am asking for the Fairy Tales Problem solving STEM kits. These kits will provide the opportunity for my students to design a house that can’t be blown down, construct a bridge that keeps 3 goats safe from the troll, and build a chair even Goldilocks can’t break! The kits will also allow my scholars to discover the STEM in their favorite fairy tales and hopefully inspire them to further explore each challenging situation until they find a solution! The second is the John Henry Problem Solving STEM Kit that will offer students the opportunity to investigate the legend of John Henry, then build a working conveyor belt to help him race a steam-powered drill! The kit will also help them to discover the STEM in a classic folk tale and thereby inspire them to use hands-on materials to design, build and test a conveyor belt that really hauls rocks. They then later can improve their design like real engineers! Each kit comes with a STEM focused story card, student challenge cards, a detailed lesson plan and a reproducible design sheet, 102 pieces to build a conveyor belt, 10 rocks, a crate, a 16 1/2" mountain facade and a ruler. Again, these Fairy Tales and John Henry STEM materials kits will enhance an integrated curriculum which will help build math, science and literacy skills. My goal is prepare my students while affording them ample opportunity to pursue STEM related careers.
