Facing Our Emotions During Quarantine

My Students

Right now, my school is closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. My students have a lot of difficulties in dealing with their emotions as it is. Now, with everything going on, many are having a difficult time coping. Some are finding ways to cope with the things we’ve discussed throughout the year, but some need some guidance. Although our county is not requiring any teaching via technology (due to many either not having access to the internet or a device), I have been “meeting up” with my students on my caseload via Google Meet to try to socialize and talk about what is going on with each other. I also have read books online for my students (or any student of the school) who has access to technology to hear some stories.

My Project

I am huge on discussing and talking through emotions. Like mentioned, many of my students have a difficult time expressing their emotions and coping with situations. In class, we had discussed some different coping strategies when faced with various situations. However, this was nothing we could have prepared for. I have sent letters to my students with some relaxing coloring pages for them to relax and regroup with. A lot of my students enjoy being creative and using that as an outlet. The scratch art shapes will be sent to my students for them to be able to have some time to themselves to just be creative. The self calming cards will be recorded and put on my website for families as a resource. The books are on this list to be able to record some read alouds of not only picture books but chapter books of their choosing. All of the books chosen either have a theme of self regulation, kindness, or inclusion of others. I want my students to feel some sort of norm while being stuck at home.
