Facilitating SEL: Positive Outcomes In & Out of the Classroom
Help me give my students materials to reinforce and practice their SEL skills to include: focus, growth mindset, goal setting, emotion management and relationships skills.
Middle school is a time when students’ cognitive capacities, including abstract thinking and moral reasoning, increase. During this, time middle schoolers become aware and are especially sensitive to their peers and experience an increased intensity of emotions. Kids are "carrying" a lot in their metaphorical book bag even before they walk through our school doors.
I am creating a social, emotional learning lab for middle school students to utilize and have access to SEL resources that will help students in and out of school.
Students will be given opportunities for practicing self-awareness and self-management, increasing social awareness, building relationship skills, and making responsible decisions.
This is an important time for students. They are trying to figure out who they are, what friends really are, and where they fit in their school and home communities. SEL skills can help support student success in and out of the classroom.
My Project
Social, emotional learning competencies have a direct correlation to the academic success of all students.
SEL skills can be taught, modeled, reinforced and lead to positive student outcomes for success in and out of the classroom.
Science Links SEL to Student Gains:
* Improvement in students’ social and emotional skills, attitudes, relationships, academic performance, and perceptions of classroom and school climate
* Decline in students’ anxiety and behavior problems
* Long-term improvements in students’ skills, attitudes, prosocial behavior, and academic performance
* 11 percentile-point gain on standardized tests
The objective is to create a space that counselors can facilitate transformative SEL with students, empowering their voice and experiences. The space (SEL Lab) will also provide learning stations to include hands-on activities, manipulatives, and other SEL resources for interactive experiences (to support learning objectives also taught in the classroom.)
