We are a multicultural classroom. The majority of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. We have a large population of migrant students from various places. The largest group is students from Somalia. For some of our students, this is their first time going to school in America.
Many of our students are trauma-impacted, low-income students.
These students view school as their safe place and a place where they can be themselves. We have a very supportive community that is built mostly of refugees.
My Project
This school year we have had many challenges however our school has remained open for in-person learning. One of the big challenges we face is making sure our students have masks and are wearing them correctly.
Students like to change masks during the day and love to be rewarded.
Wearing a mask all day makes the mask you have damp and it is uncomfortable to wear a damp mask. I would like to have masks available for students if they don't have one or if they need a fresh one. I would also like to have rewards for students that are wearing them correctly with hot chocolate and a protein of beef jerky.
