In my classroom we learn about people from around the world. We read, study history, look at problems in math, and discover in science. But we do it all while learning about each other.
"You know, the more I learn about her life the more I see how we really are the same, no matter where we live!" I remember when my student made this comment, and how it changed the conversation in the room.
I have 21 fourth graders in my class. They come from a varying backgrounds and households. We work to learn about each other and find how we are the same while we are also very different.
My Project
Read aloud and the conversations that follow are a critical component of my elementary classroom. The picture books in this list were chosen carefully because their content lends themselves to marvelous conversations and are current in publication.
Picture books offer the opportunity to ask questions, make observations, expand world views, and deepen understanding.
Not only will the conversations centered around these texts promote and develop reading comprehension, but these picture books will also help students develop their conversation and social skills while developing empathy and the capacity to understand the world around them. Contributing to this project is a contribution to not only our classroom library, but the conversations that build and expand ideas about our world.
