My Students

I teach in a public education special needs classroom that is designed to support students with moderate to severe special needs. These beautiful students learn in an engaging & authentic community based instruction program that is specially designed with their learner needs in mind. Students display academic delays, but also delays regarding their functional daily life skills which their same-aged peers mastered many years ago. Functional programs, such as this one, strive to support learners exactly where they are to develop independent individuals who will, in turn, support the community post high school.

Students receiving special education services deserve to be instructed by a highly qualified special education teacher in a nurturing, engaging, and authentic learning environment.

When given the opportunity to a program which focuses on communication, problem solving skills, and self-advocacy, students with special needs can flourish to live functional, independent lives.

My Project

Most students with special needs learn skills by way of manipulating objects as opposed to paper/pencil methods. With functional file folders, students can use laminated pieces to demonstrate learning and mastery of an assigned life skill (i.e. summer vs. winter clothing) that can then be generalized into other learning environments.

The items I am requesting will be key in giving students with special needs opportunities to demonstrate their abilities through different modalities of learning.

Students with special needs are able learners, and giving them an opportunity to these file folders would be giving them access to an equitable learning environment.
