Being a support mathematics teacher allows me the opportunity to utilize my background in mathematics as well as special education. I am able to teach students from grades 3-6 who are struggling the most with learning grade level mathematics. I typically work with about 8 students at a time in a small group setting that focuses on what they specifically need to help them reach the Common Core Standards.
Many of my students are coming from low-income households or are English language learner students.
Coming from a low-income household should not be an excuse for these students to not be successful in school and they deserve all the wonderful tools to help them be successful in math.
My Project
The Common Core Math Standards have asked students to understand difficult concepts like fractions at a younger age. It also challenges students to meet fluency standards across the grade levels for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division so that they can apply this knowledge to complex word problems.
Research has shown that when students practice mathematics in engaging, hands-on ways, they have a chance to talk about their mathematical thinking and, in turn, have greater success in comprehending difficult concepts as well as mastering math facts.
For this reason, I am asking for support in purchasing file folder games that will help develop an understanding of fractions as well as help students master basic math facts. I am also asking for support in purchasing a kit that would help organize task cards, flash cards and other teacher created materials so that students can access these materials more easily.
