My students are truly amazing. This group of children is, by far, the best class I've ever had! They are passionate, thoughtful, kind, and deserving. They are great listeners and wonderful participants. I have 13 boys and 11 girls this year, which has proved to be a great balance. Our neighborhood has a mix of ethnicities and income level, so each child has something very special to contribute. These children LOVE to learn through being active!
My Project
Redesigning a classroom or implementing unassigned flexible seating is a shift in both structure and teaching philosophy - an entire mindset shift. Outside the windows of our classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices. Why limit student's choices inside the classroom? Why do their thinking and problem solving for them?
Our classroom environments should be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.
This simply cannot be done when kids are sitting in rows of desks all day. Flexible seating will foster all of this and more.
A learning cube will provide a safe and comfortable space for a student to work alone, without disruption. Some other students just need to MOVE while learning! Wobble chairs will be perfect for that because it allows them to expend energy by wiggling around, which allows for better focus. And yet others prefer to lay back in soft seats comfortably and work on clipboards. We, as adults, don't always choose to sit at a desk with a rigid chair to do our work. Why should we expect children to?
