My students need flexible seating options like wobble chairs, sensory cushions, and wedges for upper body support. They also need accommodations like colored transparencies, fidgets, and chewies.
This year, I am embarking on a new journey as I move positions to ESE (Exceptional Student Education) Resource for K-2nd grade. Working with students with disabilities has been a lifelong passion of mine, and I couldn't be more excited as I work to prepare my heart and my classroom for my new little learners!
My school is a Title 1 school and serves a population consisting of 99% low income families, meaning my students qualify for free breakfast and lunch through the school.
My students have a range of disabilities, including but not limited to Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Specific Learning Disabilities, Speech and Language Impairments, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Other Health Impairments.
While they come to school with more than their fair share of setbacks, they prove their ability to persevere in the face of hardship on a daily basis. They inspire me daily to be more patient, compassionate, and sensitive to the needs of others. Our school also practices Inclusion, which means that the ESE Resource students that I serve are included in their regular classrooms for most of their day, and I will be working with diverse groups of students.
My Project
My students have a range of exceptionalities which make attention and task completion more challenging than for most.
Flexible seating options which enable children to exercise their core, fidget, and provide a sensory stimulus while remaining safely seated provide an outlet for excess energy while encouraging children to work cooperatively in a shared learning space.
In addition to flexible seating options, my students require tools to accommodate their various learning needs. These tools include colored transparencies to use with different worksheets, centers and activities; chewable pencil caps and necklaces to satisfy oral stimulation; and bulletin boards to display interactive word walls and phonics visuals.
These supplies will be used in my ESE Resource classroom, as well as around my school when my students are included in their regular classroom with their peers. As of now, my classroom has very limited bulletin board space available, and we have cinder block walls which do not allow for the installation of hanging bulletin boards or stapling onto walls. Each resource has been carefully researched and selected to meet the needs of my students.
