My students need individual book bins to hold their daily supplies for reading and writing, as well as large book bins for our classroom library, to help accommodate students of all reading levels.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a school where most of my students come from families that are economically disadvantaged. Our school is considered high-poverty, and approximately 70% of our students receive free lunch.
I teach 20 students who come from so many different backgrounds, but who all have one thing in common: a desire to learn and play!
The students that come to me every day are silly, smart, and curious about the world around them! They take pride in everything they do, and there is nothing quite like experiencing the world through their eyes.
My Project
My students use the same book bins, year after year. While this is fine, over time the bins get tired from being what I like to call "over-loved"! The kids use these bins for 181 days a year. They sit on the floor with them, drop them (and trust me, in first grade, that happens often), and throw their pencils, papers, and books in them. My students treat their book bins well, but with all the use they get, the bins are getting tired. This current set is on its 6th year of use, and the bins are looking worn out. I bleach them each year, so the color has faded, and a couple of them are starting to crack. The plastic is wearing in some places, also. I am trying to give my students a new set of bins so they'll feel ready for the school year!
This project will give my students a fresh set of reading supplies to begin their new school year.
In addition to their book bins, the class will receive new chapter and picture book bins to store books that do not fit in our current bookshelves. I will be able to open up a new section to our classroom library. I am so excited, and I've been collecting picture books that are engaging and child-friendly with this goal in mind! My last class LOVED the author Jan Thomas, and I was never able to fit her books in the book bins I currently have. As a result, my students had to check the books out directly with me, so I could bring them out of storage each time. The addition of these specially-sized book bins to my classroom would mean I could leave these books out for student enjoyment!
