Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in our classroom begins by meeting at the carpet to discuss what we will learn that day, doing the calendar and charting the weather.
My students are eager to learn to read or become better readers.
By the end of this year in first grade I want each student not just be able to read but to LOVE to read.
I teach first grade in a high-need, low-income large urban public school district in New Jersey.
Our students come from many cultures and include a high number of special education students. More than 85% of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
My Project
I am requesting a magnetic easel center. Unfortunately, my current easel is not fully functional, thus resulting in loss of instruction time. I prefer to teach my daily phonics lesson from the carpet utilizing my easel, but this is not always so easy because my phonics cards tend to fall, along with my charts because the tray is broken. With a new fully functional easel, I envision many different lessons being taught from the carpet. I love calling my students up the easel to show their work on the chart paper, but with the charts constantly falling I have not been doing this as much and my first graders definitely miss it. Additionally, being the easel is magnetic it also can be used as a word study center for the students to work at.
The use of this magnetic easel center will change my students' lives because they now can meet on the carpet and learn together as a community each day, and this is something they look forward to.
Additionally, being this easel center has multiple functions my students also will be able to use it for word study practice during center time.
