My Students

Our Kindergarten/First Grade combination class is filled with energetic, enthusiastic learners who take joy in their educational experiences. Whether it's a morning song or a phonics lesson, a science investigation or a PE activity, my students engage themselves to the fullest in everything we do.

My class and the first grade class accompanying us on our field trip are part of a small school located in East Oakland.

Although our hillside location boasts a beautiful view of the city, most of our students do not live in the neighborhood and commute uphill from the "flatlands" where life can be very hectic and unstable. In spite of this, most of our students understand the value of education and are respectful and eager learners. Students in my class are very helpful and cooperative. Through our daily class meetings, they are learning to respect each others' feelings, advise classmates who have concerns, and discover that openly sharing a goal can increase the likelihood of its achievement. Our school has had a science focus for the past several years, based on the FOSS curriculum. Students engage in many hands-on science investigations, participate in discussions about their investigations, and write about and illustrate their investigations in their science notebooks.

My Project

The purpose of this project is to generate funds to cover the admission fee required for our kindergarten and first grade students to enhance their knowledge of living things through a visit to the California Academy of Sciences. The FOSS life science unit contains many investigations promoting discoveries about plants and animals and how they interact in an ecosystem. In addition, my class is studying the characteristics of various animal groups from insects and spiders to mammals. On this trip, students will be able to see and interact with, in real life, many of the things we have read about and discussed in class. This will not only reinforce their knowledge of those topics, but will spark an interest that will motivate many students to follow up the field trip with further study of those subjects through asking questions, doing Internet searches, and/or choosing related library books. In addition, traveling by bus over the Bay Bridge to San Francisco and back, enjoying the ride and the scenery, and having fun with their peers in a different setting will be a wonderful experience in itself.

Your donation to this project is very important to us because field trips for students are not funded the way they used to be, and children rarely get to leave campus and explore the world beyond their school and community.

This trip will provide a real-life reinforcing tool for our students that we personally could not otherwise deliver. Student learning is enhanced when it is reinforced by authentic experiences, and a richer, more effective curriculum for them is created as a result.
