Fabulous Fiction & Games for Developing Readers in Grades 3-5!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Engaging older students who are English language learners and/or who are encountering challenges as readers is a complicated, but crucial task. They need engaging literature, games, and activities that reflect the developmental levels and social norms of children their own age. This helps foster a love of reading and a desire to engage with words and text independently.

To meet this need, I am requesting texts and phonics & vocabulary games based in the well researched principles of the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy.

Phonic Books Catch-Up Readers come in 10-12 book series which have been developed particularly for this population of students and which align with the most current brain based research about learning to read. They contain exciting and engaging stories from a variety of genres, are broken into chapters, have color illustrations that contain a diverse group of students who are in their “tweens”, and have a glossary of vocabulary for students to access.

The wide variety of books offered through the Scholastic Branches book series are created specifically for early readers to help them transition from decodable texts with color illustrations to lengthier books with a greater number of words per page and with few black and white illustrations. Students who I have worked with in the past as well as my own children have loved these stories and consistently eagerly seek out the next book in the series!

Learning games such as those from Mrs. Wordsmith increase student engagement with phonics and vocabulary in a fun, casual, active setting. They have been shown to promote the development of social emotional skills & critical thinking and boost memory retention.

Please help me fill my Intervention groups that support growing readers of all levels with exciting literature and games to stimulate their love of language!
