Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education teacher, and I need books. I teach about 28 fourth and fifth graders who have vastly different abilities and needs. I also teach English and non-English speakers. Unfortunately for these students, almost all of them have one thing in common. They are poor, and they have no books at home.
There are students in my class who are victims of Hurricane Katrina (four of them now) and have lost everything. I have students whose parents work, but don't have anything left over for non essentials. I also have students whose parents are unemployed.
All of my students love books. They love to be read to, they love to look at beautiful illustrations, and those that can love to read.
Although my classroom has books, most of them are tattered and torn from many years of use. I would like to replace them so that my students have a fresh source of inviting materials to read in the classroom and to take home to share with their families. I would like 100 new books to replace those that are old and damaged. Thank you for your consideration.
