My Students

I am a second year teacher and I have the honor of shaping 16 brilliant minds. My students are predominantly African American and we are a Title 1 school. As a teacher I pride myself on creating a welcoming classroom culture where my students are comfortable and have a active learning environment. The time on the rug is spent listening, building essential social skills and learning from each other.

There is truly something special about congregating on the carpet and as a teacher, observing my students listening to one another as they share their highs and lows.

My students feel valued when they're sitting on the carpet and feel encouraged and safe to share their thoughts as their classmates support them with snaps and smiles.

My Project

The lessons and activities that take place on the carpet are an essential component to my first graders' learning experience. Carpet activities help build a strong and caring classroom community and help refocus students' attention. A teaching easel will give me a place to create and refer back to our class-created "anchor charts" as we learn new concepts. They will later be hung around the classroom for all to see. A teaching easel will give me a place to work on a whiteboard or with magnetic materials when teaching whole group or small group lessons to students. Whiteboards will help my students practice an important life skill, accountability.

By actively involving my students in the learning, my students ideas will come to life.

They will be able to demonstrate their learning right at their desks as well as on the carpet. Having a class set will increase engagement amongst every student in a single lesson. This is extremely important for myself and my students because it provides an opportunity to see who needs a little extra support with the lesson and to be able to adjust my lesson accordingly. Personal white boards are fun for students and lends itself to flexible learning because my students are able to use them during learning centers, small group instruction, and even individual practice. It's also important for me to teach my students that we all make mistakes and that's okay. Mistakes during practice are easily wiped away, making learning fun and less intimidating.
