This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school community places the well being of each member at the forefront of every effort. Students love to come to school and learn regardless of their background or home life.

We emphasize the value of mindfulness each day, and in doing so, students and staff are kind, thoughtful, and focused; it is truly a revolutionary model that has brought together a community from all walks of life.

Despite some growing up difficult situations and stressful home lives, all students persevere through any task. By explicitly teaching my students about the growth mindset, the power of mindfulness, and the importance of grit, I have seen a transformational change in my classroom. I teach students to believe that, "When the work is harder, you get smarter," and "Confusion is the first step to learning." Students went from saying, "I can't," "I'm bad at math," and "This is too hard for me," to saying, "I can do this, I need more time," and "I can't do this, yet, will you show me again."

My Project

This sewing machine will enable me to provide students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge in hands-on, creative, and practical ways. At my former school, there was a makers' space with a wide variety of media and tools with which students could design projects that could demonstrate their learning in an extremely intellectually-rigorous way. I would like to be able to provide my current students that same opportunity to explore different assessment methods through their creativity.

Students will create models of book characters and settings, use their knowledge of area and their spatial awareness to design 3-D models of scientific phenomena, and engage in project-based learning projects that will challenge students in a real-life, validating and practical way.
