My Students

Our school is an alternative school for children that suffer from genetic mental illness, emotional disturbances, and cognitive developmental issues, to name a few. Our students have a great capacity to love. Most suffer from these disorders due to a traumatic experience in their past that has prevented them from progressing with their classmates at a base school.

As the art teacher, my job is to help them learn to regulate their emotions in a healthy way and eventually help them get back to their base school and be with their old friends.

My Project

My students greatly enjoy sewing and doodling. Continuously looking to grab their attention, I found these wonderful lessons that allow them to sew and doodle.

Each of the supplies I selected will used to expand on our art curriculum there by reaching our national Visual Arts standards.

Using socks, felt, pom-poms, and thread, my students can make realistic donuts.

The chalk and oil pastels can be used on top of their Zentangle drawings, allowing them to experiment with blending. Experimentation with these materials could be a missing component to connecting with a child at our school. The relationships we build here just may be the very thing that saves them from a future running the streets.
