Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have taught at my current school for 14 years. It is a Title 1 school with a 99% free/ reduced lunch rate. Every student in my class qualifies for free lunch and there is a wide range of talents and interests. I get to spend every weekday with 30 very special people.
My students are extremely resilient and optimistic, despite personal challenges.
They come to school each day eager to learn. They love new experiences and have innovative ideas for solving problems. I am constantly amazed by what piques their curiosity and by what makes an impression. I will casually mention a seemingly inconsequential piece of information and a student will bring it up a month later.
My Project
I am requesting professional resources to help teach vocabulary more effectively. My students struggle with reading comprehension and word analysis tasks because of a lack of exposure to descriptive, complex language and enriching conversations. I have read about studies that conclude children in lower income homes hear up to 30 million less words and participate less in discussions with multiple turns before starting kindergarten than children in higher socioeconomic groups. Although every student in my class qualifies for free/ reduced lunch based on income, this does not mean that every student of mine struggles with vocabulary. I do, however, spend a lot of time explaining what words mean when reading grade level text in addition to teaching the reading comprehension skill.
My students deserve effective, appropriate methods of closing the "Word Gap." I need to be more efficient in teaching vocabulary so we can meet all of our goals in literacy development.
The books I am requesting provide practical teaching strategies for vocabulary instruction. I believe that increasing and improving my students' vocabulary is vital to their future success and I have been struggling to find research based information.
