My students need a teaching easel to make learning more effective during small group instruction. We also need chart paper and markers so that I can create and display instructional posters.
My students are as diverse as they can get. They are a mix of many races and religions. Although 100% of my students get free lunches, they come from a variety of income brackets and financial situations. Even when they walk in our classroom, they are a mix of ability levels, social/emotional maturity, and feelings about school and learning. Above all, they are children who deserve to receive the best education possible. My school is in a very nice neighborhood, so it is often misunderstood in regards to our students needs. The neighborhood has grown past young children. Our students come mostly from run down apartments. Our neighborhood is still very supportive and involved with our school.
My Project
My students learn best when they are in small groups. They are more engaged, and I am able to provide more individualized instruction and feedback as they work. Modeling is an effective strategy I use to teach my students the skills they are learning. However, I don't have an adequate way to display the material while I'm teaching so that all students can see it.
A teaching easel would enhance the learning experience for all my students because I can display what I'm teaching in a more efficient and effective way.
I currently use a small whiteboard designed for one person to display information. Students in the group cannot clearing see what's on the board, nor do they understand the learning process. The whiteboard part of the easel gives me the space I need to demonstrate learning strategies to students. The tubs in the back of the easel provide an organized system for keeping various supplies used throughout the day. The chart paper allows me to create learning posters, and the easel provides a place for me to display them in classroom. The colored whiteboard markers enable me to make things visually pleasing to students and to distinguish between ideas or concepts.
