Eye-Opening Experiment of Food Safety and Hygiene in the Kitchen

My Project

As part of our commitment to teaching food safety and hygiene in the kitchen, our culinary students use Petri dishes to explore how easily germs can spread. Students will swab under their fingernails and cell phones—two of the most frequently touched (and dirtiest) areas—to grow and observe bacteria in real time.

This eye-opening experiment helps them understand the importance of thorough handwashing, sanitizing surfaces, and wearing gloves when preparing food.

It's a powerful reminder that even everyday items can carry bacteria that shouldn't be near what we eat.

I plan to include this activity in my lesson plans at the beginning of the school year. Hence, every culinary student starts with a clear understanding of kitchen hygiene and personal responsibility in food safety.
