As a strong STEM believer, I try to give my students ample opportunities with chances to explore new careers in the science and medical fields.
Many of my students talk extensively about pursuing a position in the medical field.
Feeling extremely proud in hopes that i had somewhat of an impact on that decision i want to make sure that all of my students get that same desire to help shape their community. I want my students to be apart of the career. What better way to do that then to actually run many of the same rest that are performed in a doctors office. Recently, I had a student, Grant, come to me discussing another career path, being an ophthalmologist. I have found the perfect route for exposing that career to all of my students. Students can run many of the same tests that are performed when receiving their annual eye exam.
I must be able to help my students lead them on to a career path, but first i must expose them to all of the possibilities. This experience will get my classes one step closer into fueling their passions for medical professions.
My Project
Having the visual perception kit and cow eyes for dissection will allow students to perform the same tests on their peers that an ophthalmologist would perform in the doctor’s office. Students will work with their peers to test for color blindness, astigmatism, depth perception, blind spots, and much more. Students will participate in a class dissection of the cow eye. Students will work with their partner to label all parts of the eye giving them a true hands-on experience.
This project will allow for students to be 100% engaged in the classroom.
They will work in groups of two and walk to ten different stations set up around the room. Each of these stations will have a different type of eye test found in the visual perception kit. After the class completes all of the stations, the class will come together to perform a class dissection of the cow eye. Using a cow eye is useful because it is the most similar to the human eye and the parts are large enough for the students to identify.
