My students love to use their hands to learn about the world around them. The boys and girls love art class and always come in with happy smiling faces wondering, "What are we going to do today?" The young artists come from a variety of backgrounds and speak over twenty different languages at my school. They are very diverse, but a love of art is what they all have in common.
In art class students learn about different cultures and the lessons are also integrated with other subjects as well as STEAM activities.
I encourage my students to make mistakes, problem solve, and challenge them to create something new. Integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, ART, and Math is something art teachers have been doing for a very long time.
My Project
Do you love optical illusions? My students do too! Help them make an easy optical illusion called a Thaumatrope! A Thaumatrope is an optical toy made popular during the 19th century. All my students need is paper, tape, drawing tools, and a pencil. What you do is make two images drawn on two paper circles. The circles are taped to the top of a pencil. When rolling pencil between hands the images appear to merge together! It is Science! It is Art! It is awesome!
The Thaumatrope project will be the hands-on project at this year's Art Fest in May!
The Art Fest is a free event where every student has a masterpiece on display. It is well attended by families and the community. I know the students and their families will love making a Thaumatrope at the Art Fest this year!
