Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Save us from worksheets and textbooks! We future mathematicians have a thirst for colorful visuals, hands-on models we can manipulate and explore, and activities that entertain and help us understand and explain how math really works in the world!
Many of my students come to me below grade level at math and with a great deal of anxiety about it!
With the right tools, however, I am able to help students overcome their hesitation, master math concepts, and see their place in the world!
My students are a great group of children who live in a low-income, urban setting in southern California. Many come from hard-working, struggling families. My students' success is largely due to the use of proven teaching techniques that are effective for all learners--especially English language learners which make up the majority. The other huge factor in their success is their motivation, and understanding that their learning is tied to life outside the classroom: past, present, and most importantly, future! My classroom is structured on the belief that all students deserve a quality education and can achieve! We just need support getting the materials we need to make learning engaging and effective for all students!
My Project
I am requesting hands-on Cuisenaire Rod kits to build conceptual understanding of place value, fractions, decimals, and percents. I can use these colorful rods to plan and provide a multitude of activities designed to strengthen everything from basic skills to difficult, high-level concepts. These supplies will make instruction of abstract concepts such as equivalent fractions (3/4 = 9/12) easier for ALL struggling learners to understand. By having these resources accessible for them to see and touch, I can reinforce learning in ways that keep their interest. These math tools will also prepare my students to succeed in the new Common Core standards which will require students to not just come to a correct answer, but explain and demonstrate their knowledge conceptually.
Help my students become master mathematicians by getting them excited and experienced!
Many students may avoid math because they feel they are "not good at it." As adults, we know the importance of math understanding in everyday living. With the right combination of teaching techniques, motivation, and resources, much progress can be made to master, enjoy, and use math in their future careers! Your support will be the difference in their lives!
