Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When our school opened 4 years ago, our library was little more than a dingy, rodent-infested closet with moldy, outdated books piled in corners. We've since made massive improvements, but if we want to create a welcoming place that empowers and inspires students, we still have a ways to go.
My students have come to our school for educational opportunities that they otherwise would not be able to get from their zoned schools.
Most come in at an average for 3 grade levels behind in reading and math due to inadequate elementary instruction. Outsiders might expect for them to be apathetic or overwhelmed with the educational deficits they have to overcome, but their desire to exceed expectations is what drives me to make sure they have every resource and opportunity they need to reach their highest potential.
My Project
As our school library and literacy specialist, I am blessed with the opportunity to support all grade levels and content areas. A large part of my role is fostering a love for and value of reading in our students, but this doesn't happen over night. Students need to have access to high-interest reading materials in a variety of reading levels, genres, and formats in order to become life-long readers. They need to have access to a welcoming, aesthetically-pleasing environment that supports these habits and skills. By having a library that is stocked with non-fiction, current and relevant expository texts, they'll be able to open their eyes to how non-fiction can be both informational and enjoyable. Since classes frequently meet in the library so that students can utilize the computer lab, teachers need access to up to date classroom technology in order to maximize class time.
My students deserve to have a library that is full of high-interest, informative, inspirational materials.
They deserve to have a welcoming place to read, work, and explore the world. They deserve to have technologically relevant materials for learning. Every day I watch them fight so hard for their own chances to learn and grow as students, leaders, and citizens; and I will continue to do everything I can to give them access to the materials to do so.
