Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. All my students are capable of physical activity, but many are not motivated to try. Exercise, sweating and doing something new is extremely uncomfortable. But with X-Box fitness games, their motivation will soar.
I teach children ages 5-8 with mild to moderate autism.
Some of their challenges are poor motor skills, poor social skills and an inability to see others perspective. Also, communication is very difficult. Most of the children in my class are English Language Learners.
One rainy day our Adaptive PE teacher came into class to set up his son's WII so we could play a dance game and some virtual sports. Not one foot was still and not one child sat out. There was no whining. There were smiles, laughter and everyone enjoyed moving their bodies. This amazed me because some of the students hate to participate and complain constantly during PE.
My Project
The ability to hop, jump, skip and stand on one foot are just some of the goals my students have within their IEP goals. Part of our Core State Standard is that Students demonstrate the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. With the X-Box, my students will be practicing these skills and not even be aware of it.
With childhood obesity on the rise, I need to find creative ways to motivate my students to enjoy exercising. The X-Box is one of my solutions. We will play more competitive games to learn social behavior, like being a good winner or a good loser. Finally, the X-Box will promote communication between students. With high motivation, they will be coxed out of their own world and join the world we live in.
Having an X-box would revolutionize my P.E.
program. Not only will the students be motivated to learn new skills and practice ones they may already know, but they will also become life long fitness enthusiasts. But more than that, they will develop social skills that will carry on into their adult lives.
