This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"America is a country of inventors, and the greatest of inventors are the newspaper men" - Alexander Graham Bell
My students believe that our school newspaper "The Lincoln Ledger" is the greatest invention in our school. However, with limited resources it is difficult to keep it in print!
My Newspaper Students are a motivated group of ESL learners who love creating our school newspaper.
We are a Title 1 School with limited resources. We are scheduled to meet one period a week but end up meeting much more then that because the "reporters" love their work. They come during their lunch periods to complete articles or interviews. They do not allow their limited English proficiency to get in the way of writing the best articles. They are hard workers who I am lucky to teach!
My Project
I can picture the look on the students faces when they receive the voice recorders! They will be able to interview their subjects more thoroughly. It is also a skill that they will be able to use in the future both in HS and College. The art supplies will help my illustrators create better artwork. They will have drawing paper and illustrator pencils as well as markers. They will truly learn the components of great newspaper reporting.
We all look at newspapers for different reasons, the latest headlines, gossip, the funnies or sports.
I look at it as a way to validate my students writing and artwork. The pride that they have when they see their hard work being printed and distributed to our entire school body of 800 students is an amazing feeling. You would be an integral part of that experience each time The Lincoln Ledger goes to print by supporting this project.
