Extracting History in Literature

My students need a library of history books to use as references to help broaden their knowledge of various events that took place in U.S. History.

My Students

Being a teacher in a rural high poverty/low-income Title 1 school district, I strive for every student to have an equal opportunity in receiving a quality education. It is extremely important to guide all students, many of which have limited resources at home.

I believe that many of my students need the extra attention to receive an opportunity to be successful after high school.

My students are held accountable for their actions and I want to provide them with all tools necessary to do so. I would like to have a classroom library to provide a foundation for students to do research. We preach about sending students out to be role models and pillars in our community, so I believe that we need to explore every avenue to continue to help them reach their goals.

My Project

By building a library of literature that encompasses historical events, my students will be able to use these books as a base for a research paper. I am teaching my students how to pull topics from a story that is interesting to them and compare and contrast those topics with the real history of that time period. They are required to use additional sources to support their thesis.

It is really important for my students to make the connections from the books to actual events, people, and locations in history.

I would love to offer a variety of books for my students to chose from instead of being told to read a book from one area of history. I want them to have ownership in their choice.
