Help me give my students materials for our classroom and school supplies that they can use daily, such as personal headphones and dry erase boards. Students often will have a few basic materials, but not extra materials.
Student organization is something that we focus on in our classroom at the beginning of each year and revisit that personal skill often. We organize our math notebooks and journals by homerooms, then we alphabetize them. Each math assignment for the week is placed inside each students own notebook. Students are able to keep up with their work and check off the assignment when it is completed.
Students need to learn at the beginning of middle school to be organized and accountable for their own assignments.
We want to not only teach students math skills, but also life skills that will help them as they move to upper grades. Using folders, bins, and check sheets will help them get started off on the right foot.
Students will use the dry erase boards and dry erase circles so that they can easily and efficiently work out their math problems without wasting paper. Writing the problems down so that I can see them often helps the student and I to go through the steps to see where along they problem they had trouble. Students are allowed to watch videos that are provided by our curriculum and having their own set of headphones makes that option readily available to the students without interrupting their classmates.
Having the "little extra materials" makes a huge impact on student learning!
