Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I love the students I teach because they are all so unique and special. I teach in a school populated with most students living at or below the poverty line, yet their eagerness to learn and thrive is so incredibly rich. I love the students I teach because they all have different backgrounds, responsibilities at home, possibly extreme circumstances, and/or a rough home life and yet come to school with a smile on their face and NEVER fail to put a smile on mine. I love them with all of my heart.

My Project

I want to provide my students with the Scholastic News magazines because I want them to connect with the world around them in a meaningful way. We have iPads in our school, but I want them to actually FEEL a magazine in their hands and read articles that are not only engaging and colorful, but age-appropriate and with grade-level text. Finding appropriate articles online that fit these criteria is a difficult task, which is why I love Scholastic News. I want to teach students to be world-ready and to understand that there is more than just their small, rural hometown to look forward to in life. Many of these articles also highlight problems in the world or our country, and give examples of other kids who are working to solve them. This is truly inspirational and might open a door for a student that would be closed otherwise.
