My students need to be exposed to current events in a child friendly manner, using 15 subscriptions each to 4 current events magazines. In an effort to improve social studies students need to become familiar with their world.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
There is so much we don't know! We want to read about everything that is going on around us!
My group of students are suffering the effects of budget cuts and the economic recession and don't even know it.
They are a part of a 4th and 5th grade bridge class that was set up this 2011-2012 school year because the lack of available funds to make two separate classes.
They attend a school where 99.9% of students receive free or reduce cost lunch.
They are bright children eager to learn new things. Their thirst for knowledge is inspiring and has brought me here to try and give them all the opportunities that I can to help them become incredible human beings.
My Project
With the access to child friendly current events articles from Scholastic News and Time for Kids, students can be exposed to what is going on around them. They are held captive to the four corners of their New York City block and furthermore by economic issues that do not allow them to travel very far outside of the five boroughs.
I see Scholastic News and Time for Kids as tools to opening their eyes. They can start forming opinions and understanding things that they did not know exist. With knowledge about the world they can become inspired to achieve great things beyond what they are used to. Through current events students will become aware of their world and develop compassion and an understanding for other communities and cultures.
Such exposure to up to date articles will also help students to build content vocabulary exposing them to issues that are directly effecting their present and future.
Please help me to bring the real news to my students by donating to our project.
Scholastic News and Time for Kids are great subscriptions that could really help students develop real world knowledge. In educating our children about the world around them today, we can start building a society that can answer the call to humanitarian needs. Help a generation of students with little knowledge of the world outside New York City develop an understanding of and appreciation for their world.
