My Students

My students come from all over Philadelphia to attend classes at our high school. I work with students across grades 9-12 through my 10th grade English classes, AP Literature classes, and the school newspaper. The majority of our students come from poverty-stricken neighborhoods. Our school district and school have minimal funding resources and we barely have enough money in our budget to pay for necessities like books and paper.

My students are dedicated and hard-working young scholars intent on high achievement.

As a history-themed school in Pennsylvania, our core tenets are knowledge of history, democratic deliberation, and active citizenship. We work to achieve these tenets in our classroom through active engagement with texts and a focus on critical analysis of the world around us. We are working to become better writers and readers in order to become lifelong learners and active citizens in our world.

My Project

Many of my students are very excited to create a strong school newspaper in order to learn more about journalism and to celebrate student achievements. We have budding photographers and writers who are eager to create a quality newspaper.

Unfortunately, our printing budget is limited and we do not have any quality cameras.

We are hoping to create a strong online newspaper when we cannot print, but need the resources to do so. This project would allow us to make our newspaper more professional and entice more students to get involved.

In addition to their use for the school newspaper, these supplies would also allow my English classes to participate in small group learning on a more regular basis. It would allow my English classes to work on their writing and allow me to create writing workshops in the classroom and after-school.
