My Students
One doesn't by chance fall into the profession of teaching, teaching and making a difference in children's lives, somehow someway chooses you. Most educators choose this profession to truly impact and make a difference in the lives of their students. This can be via academics or by mentoring students and providing them with a safe-haven for a few hours a day.
Hialeah Elementary School is where I call home and teach reading, language arts, and writing to my 5th grade students.
Hialeah Elementary School is a Title I school which means it has a large population of low socio-economic background families. My school is composed of students of varies backgrounds but our largest population is that of English Language Learners (ELL) students whom are acquiring English as a second language. Many migrate here from other countries for a better chance of life and better opportunities. Over 90% of our students due to their financial situations are either receiving free or reduced lunch.
Teaching is the noblest and toughest profession out there. We are truly shaping our student to be life-long learners and productive citizens of this ever-changing technologically advanced world.
My Project
My 5th grade homeroom class compiled of 24 students would receive these magazines on a weekly basis and be able to transport themselves to different parts of the world. They would be exposed to different cultures and people's customs. They include maps and graphs as they fused reading across all curriculum's.
This project will significantly impact my students as they will read about age-appropriate current events that reflect the current times.
For instance, with all of the buzz around the upcoming presidential elections, the magazine is currently showcasing both presidential candidates and their direction for this country. We love reading!
