This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach at a great school in the South Bronx where students come to school ready to learn despite their circumstances. Our school is located in a high poverty area and many of our students live in housing projects, shelters, or in single-parent homes.
Despite some of these struggles, our students see our school as their second home.
They feel safe and loved by all of the staff. We are a true community of learners striving to be a little better each day. This school year I will be the school librarian and want to have a bountiful of books to read to all my classes. Our values at my school are Collaboration, Appreciation, Responsibility, Empathy and Steadfastness. I choose books that touch upon each of these values and other topics that students may have a hard time discussing. There's nothing like a great book to start important, tricky and even hard conversations with students. A book tends to allow students to see that they're not alone and are not the only ones going through things in life. My hope and goal is to increase a love for reading and discussion with all the students I will teach and who will visit the school library.
