This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"The doors of wisdom are never shut." said Benjamin Franklin. As a third grade teacher, I am trying to open wide these doors and show my students ways to keep them open for themselves in the future. I want them to understand how to read and love to read nonfiction and informational texts.
My students come from a high poverty urban area.
Many families are struggling financially because of the downturn in the current economy in Michigan. Nonetheless, they are hopeful for a better future for their children. My students are very hard-working and care about their future. They are excited about learning new information. Even though they come from little they have big dreams.
My Project
The magazines I have selected will open up the world outside of our classroom and community to my students. In this global world, it will introduce the students to world views, happenings, and cultures. These magazines will teach them about new places and new ideas outside of our state. The science articles will teach them about new advances and how the world around them works. Another advantage will be that along with the new ideas and concepts, my students will be exposed to the new vocabulary and structure that reading informational, nonfiction text brings. It will make them more knowledge, capable, and fluent readers.
This project will be very beneficial for my students.
Increasing their knowledge of world and current events will help them to make more informed choices and grow to become responsible citizens. It will help them become more comfortable with informational text and encourage them to go on and read and research these kinds of writings in the future. It will help prepare them and move them towards a better future.
