Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Being at our school for several years, I have gotten the chance to really get to know many of the students in the school, including those I have never taught. Many of them have gone through seriously adverse situations and misfortunes that impact their everyday life, especially their education. I am amazed at how resilient they can be, and how they push through to the best of their abilities regardless of hardships that affect them. Being a fifth-grade teacher has shown me how fast some students have to mature. I have taught their younger siblings in previous years (coming up from kindergarten and first grade) and see how they take care of their family. Each child that I have gotten to know at this school has my heart.
I want nothing but the best for all of these students, and that includes giving them hands-on experiences that will be memorable to them.
My students need to be able to feel like school isn't another one of their draining duties or work. I want all of them to enjoy school and look forward to each day in my class, whether in person or virtually. They truly deserve the best!
My Project
I have been working hard to make my classroom library a welcoming space for my students. I know that I can achieve that in two ways: with inclusive and multicultural books, and with a clean reading carpet. The classroom library environment is one that should be clean and tidy, and because of the shortage of custodians right now, the rug never gets vacuumed. I know that there are students that would love to be a part of helping to keep it clean.
My students are constantly making requests for new chapter books and love the daily read-alouds that start off our day.
I want to continue to provide them with meaningful experiences by giving them more books that remind them of themselves, as well as ones that give them a good laugh in the morning.
