My Students

My students are a group of eager first graders at a wonderful public school in the largest urban school district in the state, located in the heart of the city. We have a diverse student body made up of neighborhood kids, as well as transfers that seek out a coveted spot in our school. As the only public school in our city that is not Title I-funded, meaning we don't qualify for additional state funds, we rely on families, the community, and DonorsChoose to help equip our classrooms.

My students value education and look forward to coming to school every day, excited to find out what each new day has in store for them.

They enjoy our calm, inviting, and child-centered classroom where they participate in creative, hands-on activities that stimulate their curious minds. My students develop a love of learning and a desire to always do their best, qualities I cherish as a teacher.

My Project

Research shows that students who read just 20 minutes a day will be exposed to over one million words per year. I truly believe the key to helping a student grow and be successful is teaching them to love and value reading.

I want to help all of my students learn to love reading and meet their reading goals at the same time.

Children have always enjoyed getting surprises from vending machines, so I am bringing this excitement to the classroom. I will use the vending machine to help motivate my students to read independently by offering opportunities to earn the tokens as they read books and meet their reading goals. Students will then be able to use the tokens they earn to visit our "mystery machine" and get those surprise treats they love!
