There is never a dull moment in my classroom with the bright, funny, creative individuals I have the pleasure of teaching. My students are in a self-contained middle school special education classroom for students with a variety of disabilities that make it difficult for them to access their grade level academics. Each child has an individual education plan to help them make progress on goals in academics, social skills, communication, and functional life skills. About 1/3 of my students speak English as a second language and every student works significantly below their grade level in all academic areas.
My students love to come to school and it is my joy to get to be their teacher.
They are very hard workers and try their best to grow and learn in every subject. They are full of curiosity, energy and incredible potential. We try to always focus on the positive and celebrate every success that our students achieve. Every day we do our best to make sure that our students have the necessary tools they need to succeed, but it's not easy when you have a small classroom budget per year in a high-poverty school.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of Scholastic News and Science Spin, as well as online access to Mystery Science lessons. Each student will receive a weekly newspaper to read about current and upcoming events. They will also receive a subscription to Science Spin, which will provide them with a monthly science magazine to read and learn about a range of high-interest science topics. Mystery Science is a great online resource with short video science lessons and worksheets. Students will be able to actively read and engage in learning activities based around current events, science, and other topics presented to them in a magazine format.
This project is important because my students require hands-on interactive ways of learning about current events.
Not only will we receive the classroom subscription, but each will come with an online component that will allow me to project the articles, images, and activities in an interactive format to keep the students engaged and learning.
