My unique, special group of students come from the highest level of poverty. 98% of my students receive free and reduced lunch. Most live in unstable or unsafe home environments and neighborhoods. Coming to school is one of their greatest joys because they are safe and receive two hot meals.
My students are fun, kind, and eager to learn, they just don't have the tools or support they need at home.
I want to do everything I can as a teacher to support them and help them to overcome their situations and love learning the way I do!
Despite struggles that they encounter every day, they come to school ready to learn and happy. I focus every day on the positives in our lives and we frequently talk about the good in the world. Help me to show them how the kindness of strangers works!
My Project
I am asking for high interest book study novels and reading comprehension folders.
My class would love new novels that they can relate to, as well as have interest in reading.
My students are so excited to do reading groups, especially since they are student led. They love sharing the responsibility of the leadership roles. The books I have requested all have a relation in some way to my students lives. They are also all award winning books. They have been learning about some of these titles in library but funding is not available to purchase. These books will not only help keep the reading spark lit but they foster important communication between my students.
I am also asking for close reading and comprehension folders. I am asking for these because non-fiction can be a hard genre to comprehend so it is important I teach my students the skills to read deeper than just the words. These small group supplemental materials will help with my individualized learning.
