This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are intelligent and creative, but they are lacking experiences in reading. They come from a low income neighborhood, with over 95% receiving free and reduced lunch. My students come from a variety of backgrounds: different countries, different family structures, and a wide variety of academic abilities.
My English Language Learners and below grade level readers need books that interest them while enriching their reading experiences.
Even though their reading levels are low, their interests levels are on target with their age. Due to their varied backgrounds, they bring different experiences to comprehending what they read.
Because of their varied levels, my students need more texts that will help build vocabulary and improve their comprehension skills thus developing a love for reading.
My Project
Our school district uses Guided Reading for small group reading instruction. In Guided Reading, the teacher works with leveled reading groups. In these groups, the students read to the teacher then have a short Q & A session about what they read.
My students will read these books during small group reading instruction for individual reading and discussion, as well as choral reading and discussion.
Bloom's Taxonomy will be used as a guide for questioning.
My students will feel more successful, because they will be reading books on their level that interest them. By feeling more successful, my students reading comprehension should improve.
